The country’s largest and longest-running commemoration

Independence Blue Cross (IBX) President and CEO Kelly Munson joined Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Temple University President John Fry, and many other local leaders to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of community service and impact.

CEO Munson helped kick off the 31st Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service at Temple University with remarks before joining civic leaders and volunteers in a hands-on service project. IBX served as the lead sponsor of the event organized by Global Citizen, the oldest and largest commemoration of Dr. King’s commitment in the United States,

This year’s signature project, presented by IBX, supported the overarching theme of equity in education. Volunteers, including members of the IBX Blue Crew, assembled Book Arks for underserved neighborhoods, created book boxes, put together literacy kits, and designed bookmarks. The effort will directly expand access to books and learning resources across the region.

In addition to helping with the Global Citizen signature project at Temple University, IBX Blue Crew volunteers participated in two other Day of Service activities:

  • Sorting donations that will be distributed to children in need at the Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory
  • Packing senior food boxes and sorting produce for distribution to local cupboards at Share Food Program

The IBX Talent Acquisition team was also onsite at Temple University to meet with people and help them explore job opportunities at the Global Citizen job fair.

In the afternoon, IBX Foundation President and VP Community Affairs Lorina Marshall-Blake spoke at the National Bell Ringing Ceremony at Independence Mall. Following that, she was honored for her leadership and unwavering dedication to community service with the MLK Drum Major Award at the 43rd annual MLK Day Society Annual Awards and Benefit Luncheon.
