In the 1950s we utilized modern computing machines in our offices for the first time, and we collaborated with Bell Telephone to develop a teletype communications system that connected Independence to network hospitals. This allowed benefits to be approved within hours of a member being admitted. During this decade, we also created a physician review board to oversee hospital care for our members.
