Independence Blue Cross (IBX) leaders from the company’s Information Security Office and Privacy Department, along with an expert from the PA Cyber Fraud Task Force, spoke about online safety and fraud at an education session hosted by the Philadelphia Senior Center.
IBX representatives Charles Crabtree, Director of Information Security; John Martin, Technology Risk Management; and Daniel Cutler, Lead Privacy Compliance Analyst, shared information and tips with more than 25 area seniors about how to safeguard personal information when browsing and shopping online, how to spot fake emails and texts, and how to determine what not to post online.
In 2023, total losses reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center by Americans over 60 years old was more than $3.4 billion, an 11% increase compared with 2022. The FBI also noted a 14% increase in complaints filed by older targets of these crimes between 2022 and 2023, which may include romance scams, lottery “contest winner” fraud, and social media schemes.
