Independence was proud to support the first-ever PA Donor Day on January 8. The event aimed to help raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and to encourage people in Pennsylvania to register to become organ donors.
Throughout the day, Independence worked to educate associates, members and the public about organ donation through articles, e-mails and social media posts.
Every 10 minutes, someone in Pennsylvania is told they need a life-saving transplant, according to the Center for Organ Recovery and Education. With more than 7,500 patients currently on the transplant waiting list, the need for more registered organ and tissue donors is a public health crisis. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and a tissue donor can enhance up to 75 lives. Last year, national organ donors made 33,000 life-saving transplants possible.
