Independence associates share their motivation to do the virtual 10-miler
Tens of thousands of runners came together for last year’s 40th anniversary of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run (BCBSR), but this year looked a little different. With the transition to a virtual race in 2020, broadcast partner NBC10 Philadelphia profiled the iconic 10-miler in a series of short segments with Philly Live’s Aunyea Lachelle.
Lachelle interviewed three members of the Blue Streaks, the running group at Independence Blue Cross. Each Independence associate talked about both the physical and mental health benefits of running.
- Jim Heckman is part of a group of dads in his neighborhood who help keep each other accountable with early morning runs.
- Pam Pfister shared her story of becoming a runner at age 55 and celebrated her 10th BCBSR this year.
- Greg Dollak, a 17-year BCBSR veteran, talked about being a part of the Blue Streaks and offered advice to get started.
The series also offered clinical insights from Independence medical directors. Dr. Reetika Kumar shared advice on incorporating activity into your daily routine and Dr. Heidi Syropoulos offered tips on fueling your body with the right foods.
The NBC10 coverage of the 2020 BCBSR concluded with a Blue Cross Broad Street Run Recap Special featuring highlights from the virtual run experience and interviews with participants. Independence has served as the presenting sponsor of the BCBSR for over 20 years.
