On Thanksgiving Day, Independence Blue Cross (Independence) supported MANNA as the presenting sponsor for the organization’s 2023 Thanksgiving meal delivery tradition.

Independence Executive Vice President of Public Affairs Steve Fera – along with leaders from MANNA, the City of Philadelphia, and other industries – participated in a kickoff event at MANNA headquarters to thank the hundreds of volunteers who came out to cook, pack, load, and drive all of the Thanksgiving meals to almost 900 clients. Each client received a full, hot Thanksgiving dinner for four people, complete with turkey, classic sides, and a pie.

“Research and experience have made it clear that factors like nutrition, housing, and transportation impact health just as much as what happens in the doctor’s office – and this is especially true for people with severe or chronic illnesses. MANNA is there for those folks, to give them the best possible chance to maintain or get back their quality of life – and we’re glad to stand with MANNA, today and every day,” said Fera.

Year-round support

Independence provides year-round support for MANNA through corporate sponsorship as well as volunteer time. In fact, MANNA is one of the strongest partners for Independence’s Blue Crew volunteer program for associates.

In the week leading up to Thanksgiving, approximately 20 Blue Crew volunteers donated 70 hours to help prepare Thanksgiving meals. Independence expects to end 2023 with more than 170 associates donating about 575 hours – which equals roughly three and a half weeks – to help MANNA fulfill its mission.
