A Love Letter to Philadelphia

By December 13, 2023December 15th, 202385th Anniversary Community Featured

Independence Blue Cross is celebrating 85 years in business, and we’re proud to call Philadelphia our hometown. We’ve grown and evolved since 1938, always working to further our mission to improve the health and well-being of this great community that we serve. One thing that hasn’t changed over the last 85 years: our commitment to serving as the Philadelphia region’s hometown health insurer. There’s so much to love about this region, and each county holds a special place in our heart.

In celebration of our anniversary, our associates helped put together a list of 85 of our favorite things about our region and we’re kicking it off with Philadelphia County.

Reasons why we love Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the birthplace of America

From the meeting of our Founding Fathers to the ringing of the Liberty Bell, we are proud to be surrounded by rich and impactful history.

We have the best sports fans in the world

Our city has the best sports fans in the world (and it’s not up for debate.) We break through noise barriers in Citizens Bank Park and fly to Eagles games across the country because our passion runs deeper than any other fan base.

We have cheesesteaks that no other city can copy

We make cheesesteaks that no other city can compare to. From their South Philly origin in 1930, we’ve had nearly a century to perfect our recipe and make the tastiest cheesesteaks there will ever be.

Our streets are home to block parties and impromptu concerts

The streets of Philadelphia are home to legendary block parties and impromptu performances. Whether we’re dancing around Rittenhouse or hosting a neighborhood festival, we’ve always found joy in celebrating with our community.

We’re a foodie’s dream spot

Philadelphia is a foodie’s dream. After winning four categories in the 2023 James Beard Awards, it’s clear our city cannot be beat when it comes to great cuisine.

Our waterfront is more than just a view

We have waterfronts that offer more than just a view. Spruce Street Harbor Park (named one of the best urban beaches in America) is a place where our community can relax on hammocks, eat Philly favorites and enjoy each other’s company in a beautiful outdoor oasis.

We get active in style

Our Indego Bikes let us get active in style. With more than 2,000 bikes accessible to Philadelphians, we are proud to sponsor an inclusive, fun and affordable approach to transportation.

We are the “Mural Capital of the World”

Philadelphia is home to more than 4,400 murals and is known as the “Mural Capital of the World.” Aimed at creating positive dialogue, our murals showcase everything we take pride in including our diversity, history and local legends.

Because art is part of who we are

Art has always been a part of who we are. Home to one of the world’s greatest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modern paintings, The Barnes Foundation is just one of the historic places that makes Philadelphia a hot spot for art lovers everywhere.

We are rich with people from all cultures and walks of life

Philadelphia residents come from all over the world. Bringing more than 180 languages to the region and tons of diverse businesses, we are proud to represent a broad scope of humanity in the city that makes us one.

Ben Franklin’s spirit still lives throughout the city

Philadelphia is proud of its people, which is why the spirit of Benjamin Franklin can be felt throughout the city. Whether it’s impersonators embodying his essence or museums preserving his ideas, our city will always honor the Founding Father.

We believe one man’s trash is another man’s treasure

When others lose hope, our community knows how to step in. After revitalizing the South Street neighborhood into the urban renaissance known as Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, our people became known for turning trash into colorful mosaics.

We work together to better our community

Philadelphians understand the importance of working together to make a meaningful change. The Independence Blue Cross Blue Crew exemplifies our city’s love for helping one another and commitment to making a better community.

We are a city of firsts

Philadelphia has always been a city of firsts, from helping people get and stay well at Pennsylvania Hospital since 1751 to being early adopters in studying and conserving wildlife at the Philadelphia Zoo. We are proud to have always paved the way for innovation across the U.S.

Our small business community is large and loyal

The small business community in Philadelphia is vast and loyal. From the 400 stores occupying South Street to the family-owned restaurants in Chinatown, we appreciate the love and energy that the city’s entrepreneurs have to offer.

We know that it’s really called Water (wooder) Ice

For those who grew up in Philadelphia, we all know it’s pronounced “wooder” ice. We may disagree on the best store or flavor, but we can all unite under its pronunciation

We are a hub for higher education

Our city is a hub for higher education and professional development. Home to the University of Pennsylvania and top-ranked universities, Philadelphia is dedicated to setting students up for success through immersive programs and colleges.

We celebrate like no other city in the world

Since Philadelphia wins big, we know how to celebrate like no other city in the world. We sell out arenas, shut down Broad Street and organize standing ovations when our teams need it most.

Every season is a reason to gather

In this city, every season is a reason to gather. It doesn’t matter if we’re skating around the IBX RiverRink or trick-or-treating in Franklin Square, if we’re together we will have a great time.

Because Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection is city-wide

For Philadelphians, Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection runs city-wide. Whether you’ve lived here forever or you’re visiting from afar, we have enough LOVE to go around (and you can see for yourself at LOVE Park.)

We believe in equitable storytelling

Philadelphia believes in equitable storytelling. We know that everyone deserves news that is relevant to their lives and cultures, which is why Independence Blue Cross proudly supports the Philadelphia Tribune, America’s oldest continuously published African American newspaper.

Because for more than 40 years, Philadelphians have shown up for a friendly competition

Even when we’re competing, our city knows how to rally behind one another. During our 43rd annual Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, 28,000 people braved the rain and pushed each other across the finish line. Independence Blue Cross has sponsored this run for 27 years and continues to see nothing but love and passion from our Philly participants.

We have the best mascots

This could come off as biased, but Philadelphia has the best mascots hands-down. Gritty may have crazy eyes and the Phanatic may have quirky dance moves, but we love them for who they are.

We raise some of the best

Philadelphia raised some of the biggest stars in America. From Hollywood to Hip-Hop, our city is considered home to celebrities like Meek Mill, Will Smith, Kevin Bacon and Patti Labelle.

We have some of the best views

Our city has sensational views and photogenic skylines. Since the founding of One Liberty Place in 1987, Philadelphia’s sky-high vantage points have only gotten bigger and more beautiful.

We believe in green spaces for all and we have one of the largest urban park systems in the United States

Philadelphia believes that nature can still be found in urban areas. Home to the largest landscaped urban park in the world, residents can find the comfort of greenery in almost every corner of the city.

We can turn any place into a fitness studio

We know how to turn any place into a fitness studio. Whether we stretch on the Waterfront or dance salsa in LOVE park, taking activities outside is our way of making exercise fun.

Our city helped define hip-hop and R&B

Our city helped define hip-hop and R&B, from the trailblazer Lady B to the newest star Lil Uzi Vert. Philadelphia was proud to celebrate Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday the best way we knew how, through art and music.

We are a hub for health innovation

Philadelphia is a city that’s pioneering scientific research and health care innovation. We have world-class hospitals and recently brought home the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, accredited to Katlin Kariko and Drew Weissman of the University of Pennsylvania for their life-changing work on messenger RNA.

Because the City of Brotherly Love is inclusive of everyone

In the City of Brotherly Love, we are advocates for inclusivity and acceptance. We wear our differences with pride and celebrate all walks of life at Philadelphia’s annual Disability Pride Parade.
