Independence Blue Cross will close its facilities and operations on Friday, June 19, 2020 in recognition of Juneteenth, the anniversary of the effective end of slavery in the United States. On this day 155 years ago, the last enslaved Americans in Texas learned they were free – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Independence joins the City of Philadelphia and other municipalities and businesses across the country closing in observance of Juneteenth.

Celebrating diversity and inclusion is one of Independence’s key corporate values. Independence is fortunate to have a diverse workforce, and the organization is committed to reflecting and understanding the diversity of the communities it serves. The organization supports the recognition of this milestone in American history as a small step toward addressing racism and injustice in our country.

Independence leadership appreciates the understanding and support of members and customers on this important day.
