Independence statement on Zika virus

At Independence Blue Cross, our first priority is the well-being of our members and our community. That’s why — like many organizations worldwide — we are closely monitoring the Zika virus cases being reported in multiple countries, including the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that people traveling to Mexico, the Pacific Islands, Cape Verde, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean practice enhanced precautions. In addition, Independence encourages women who are pregnant or who are trying to become pregnant to follow the CDC recommendation to talk to their doctor before traveling to one of the affected areas.

At this time, there are no other special recommendations for residents of the United States regarding the Zika virus. However, we are prepared to provide accurate and timely information to our members if this evolves into a more serious global health risk
