Independence President and CEO joins American University President Sylvia Mathews Burwell and former U.S. Representative Henry Waxman in giving keynote address at Next Steps in Health Reform 2017 conference

Independence Blue Cross President and CEO Daniel J. Hilferty joined leading health law, policy, and economics experts from across the country to discuss the dynamic health care landscape at the Next Steps in Health Reform 2017 conference on Friday, October 27 at American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.

Hilferty joined Sylvia Mathews Burwell, president of American University and former secretary of Health and Human Services, and Henry Waxman, the chairman of Waxman Strategies and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, as the keynote speakers at the conference. Hilftery’s keynote focused on the need to stabilize our health care system, transition to whatever comes next on a sensible timetable, and accelerate innovation to deliver long-run sustainability.

Other topics addressed at the conference included:

  • Health care delivery and payment reform, including value-based purchasing, transparency, and drug pricing.
  • Private insurance regulation, including coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions, tax credits, and essential health benefits.
  • The future of Medicaid and CHIP, including financing and eligibility reform and the evolving federal-state relationship.
  • Responses by states and communities to the changing federal role in health care.
