Philadelphia, PA — March 17, 2020 —  Given the spread of COVID-19 in the region and Independence Blue Cross’s (Independence) commitment to protecting its workforce, the company announced today that Independence offices in the Philadelphia area and New Jersey will be closing today at 5 p.m. until further notice.

“This is an unprecedented time for our company, our region, and our country,” said Daniel J. Hilferty, Independence CEO. “The dedication, teamwork, and resilience we’ve seen displayed by our employees during this considerable challenge are truly inspiring and give us great confidence in our continued ability to be there for the people we serve when they need us most.”

By gradually expanding what began as a work-from-home pilot on March 2, Independence has been able to test and adapt its technology, processes, and management of its teams so that the organization can continue to serve its members and customers at the highest level.

Independence continues to closely monitor the situation, here in the region and across the country with fellow Blue plans. Independence is also collaborating with key stakeholders, such as elected officials, public health organizations, health systems, and others.
