Independence Blue Cross continued its commitment to educating and empowering associates at the company’s third annual Women of Independence Leadership Conference on Thursday, October 4, 2018. Nearly 200 associates attended the event, which was held at Independence’s headquarters in Philadelphia and titled Accelerate You: A.C.T. — Act. Commit. Thrive.

Conference highlights included sessions with Ellen Feehan, M.D., MBA, a partner at McKinsey and Company; Terri Matthews, entrepreneur, author, and autism advocate; and Bethany Edwards, CEO of LIA Diagnostics – developers of the first FDA-cleared, flushable and biodegradable pregnancy test. Key leaders from across Independence also welcomed attendees and provided their thoughts on the conference theme, including President and CEO Daniel J. Hilferty and Chief Human Resources Officer Jeanie Heffernan.

As part of its commitment to community, WOI encouraged conference attendees to participate in a collection drive for professional women’s shoes. In total, attendees contributed nearly 150 pairs of shoes which will be distributed to women through Career Wardrobe, a nonprofit social enterprise that uses clothing and professional development to empower unemployed individuals to work.

Women of Independence (WOI), one of several Independence associate resource groups, seeks to empower and support women as they identify and cultivate their talents and abilities. This is done through professional development, community engagement, and health and wellness opportunities.
