Independence employee group mobilizes to help victims of Hurricane Maria

Independence Blue Cross associates – as well as associates at Independence subsidiaries and affiliates – continue to step up and meet the challenge facing victims living in areas hit hardest by the latest round of hurricanes.

At Independence locations throughout the region, bins are filling up with essential supplies for the people of Puerto Rico. The collection efforts are being sponsored by Latinos con Propósito, Independence’s associate resource group focused on engaging Latino employees and the external Latino community through professional development, community outreach, networking opportunities, and health and wellness efforts.

“Time and again, our associates have stepped up to help wherever it’s needed most, and this time is no different,” said Juan Lopez, vice president of Treasury Services at Independence and executive sponsor of Latinos con Proposito. “The destruction caused by Hurricane Maria has left people in desperate need of essential supplies, so we’re doing our best to provide aid during their time of crisis.

The drive runs from September 27 through October 6. Essential items collected – from gauze, bandages, and hand sanitizer to toilet paper, diapers, batteries, and feminine hygiene products – will be sent to Norris Square Community Alliance (NSCA), a nonprofit organization that serves residents of lower northeast Philadelphia. NSCA will facilitate the delivery of supplies to Puerto Rico.
