Independence Blue Cross (Independence) was named a 2021 honoree of The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia by Philadelphia Foundation, in partnership with Points of Light and local partners.

Modeled after Points of Light’s national program, The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia provides a standard for corporate citizenship and showcases how employers use their time, skills, and resources to drive social impact in their communities and company.

For more than 80 years, Independence has led the way in community engagement through a wide range of diverse and impactful initiatives, including the Blue Crew corporate volunteer program. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Blue Crew volunteers averaged more than 15,000 volunteer hours every year for at least 95 organizations.

Most recently, during the pandemic, Independence jumped into action to drive education and awareness to help combat the spread of the virus through its “Beat COVID-19” public health campaign. The Independence Blue Cross Foundation continued to serve as a leader to nonprofits through its support of COVID related needs, including food insecurity, access to community-based testing and vaccinations, and domestic violence.

The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia honorees are private and public companies and other employers operating in the Philadelphia region. They were selected based on four dimensions of their community engagement program:

  • Investment of resources
  • Integration across business functions
  • Institutionalization through policies and system
  • Impact measurement

Since 2011, The Civic 50 has provided a national standard for superior corporate citizenship and has showcased how companies use their time, skills and other resources to drive social impact in their business and community.
