Independence Blue Cross (Independence) has earned the 2021 Top Workplaces USA award, a recognition based solely on employee feedback. This is the inaugural year for the Top Workplaces USA award, which honors national companies that prioritize a people-centered culture and are committed to giving employees a voice.

Winners are chosen based on the responses that Independence employees offered in a survey administered by Energage, LLC in late 2019. The anonymous survey measured how associates feel about workplace culture, company values, and whether their job makes them feel part of something meaningful.

“We are honored to be among the Top Workplaces USA list,” said Jeanie Heffernan, Independence executive vice president and chief human resources officer. “Our associates are the foundation to the quality of work and service our company produces. We value their significant contributions and are so proud to support their personal growth and professional development.”

More than 1,100 companies from across the country competed for the honor of being named to the Top Workplaces USA list. There were four employee size bands considered: 150-499; 500-999; 1,000-2,499; and 2,500-plus. Independence was recognized in the category of employers with 2,500 or more employees. Fifty-two companies nationwide made the list in this category.

Independence offers its associates competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including college tuition assistance and paid time off for preventative health screenings, and learning opportunities, such as LinkedIn Learning and the “Know Your Value” national employee development and empowerment program.

In addition, the company provides an opportunity for associates to participate in a robust list of activities and perks, including:

  • Blue Crew Volunteer Program, which connects associates with meaningful community service projects and provides paid time off for volunteer work.
  • Associate Resource Groups, identity groups where associates connected by common characteristics can pursue networking opportunities and participate in community outreach.
  • Blue Moonlighters, company-sponsored groups that connect associates with shared passions.

Energage survey results also placed Independence on the Top Workplaces in the Philadelphia Region list in 2019 and 2020. As well, last year Forbes named Independence to its list of America’s Best Employers by State 2020.
