Independence Blue Cross supports associate volunteerism during United Way Days of Caring

Philadelphia, PA – This month, Independence Blue Cross (Independence) supported associate volunteer efforts at nine locations during the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s annual Days of Caring. Nearly 200 Independence associates participated in a variety of community service projects as part of the United Way’s 365 Days of Caring initiative.

On Saturday, September 13, Independence associate volunteers took part in the Days of Caring Signature Site event held at Dr. Ethel Allen Elementary School to lend a hand to the Philadelphia School District. More than 40 members of Independence’s workforce rallied to assemble teacher toolkits, update classroom libraries, and improve outdoor play spaces through painting and gardening.

Chris Cashman, Independence executive vice president and president of commercial markets, delivered welcoming remarks. Joining Cashman at the event was Independence’s 2014 United Way campaign cochair Kimberly Eberbach, vice president of wellness and community health.

“I am proud of our associates who volunteer enthusiastically every year during Days of Caring and drive the success of our company’s United Way campaign, one donation and service project at a time,” said Cashman. “We’re pleased to support the extraordinary work of the United Way, and we look forward to continuing the tradition for years to come.”

In addition to the signature event, Independence associates also participated in Days of Caring service projects on Wednesday, September 17 at the following community sites:

  • American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
  • AstraZeneca Hope Lodge, Cheltenham, PA
  • Cradles to Crayons, West Conshohocken, PA
  • MANNA, Philadelphia, PA
  • National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Philadelphia, PA
  • Pennypack Farm and Education Center, Horsham, PA
  • Philadelphia Senior Center, Philadelphia, PA
  • SHARE Food Program, Philadelphia, PA

Independence received the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s 2013 Vanguard Award for Excellence. Cashman accepted the award on Tuesday, September 16 at a United Way board meeting. The award recognizes a company that serves as a model of corporate citizenship and demonstrates an outstanding commitment to advancing the work of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
