Show makes history with first outdoor event in 193 years
Independence Blue Cross (Independence) is proud to again be an Executive Sponsor of the iconic Philadelphia Flower Show. Presented annually by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), the Flower Show is part of PHS’s year-round efforts to create beautiful, healthy, and sustainable communities. The Show runs from June 5-13, 2021.
This year’s Flower Show theme is “Habitat: Nature’s Masterpiece.” For the first time in the 193-year history of the Show, the entire experience will be held outside at FDR Park in South Philadelphia. The expansive 15-acre location at FDR Park will feature 75 unique installations for Flower Show guests to see and interact with, including designs from:
- Jeff Leatham, artistic director for the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia
- Wambui Ippolito, an East African horticulturist and landscape designer
- Patrick Cullina, a landscape designer, horticultural consultant, and photographer known for creating and maintaining the High Line Park in New York City
An important component of Independence’s support of the Flower Show is PHS’s commitment to ensuring a safe experience for all attendees while encouraging a lifelong connection with nature. Studies have shown a number of health benefits related to spending time outdoors, including lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and improving your mood. Even two hours a week in nature – such as spending time at the Philadelphia Flower Show – is all it takes to make a difference in someone’s mental health. Through its sponsorship, Independence will encourage attendees to learn more about how to support their own mental well-being through the Know Your Mind campaign.
While at the 2021 Flower Show, attendees will have three distinct districts to explore – plant, garden, and design – with horticulture, shopping, food and beverage, music, and interactive experiences in each district. Additional guest experiences include Potting Parties, Butterflies Live!, Family Frolic, and Flowers after Hours.
For anyone interested in the 2021 Flower Show but unable to attend in person, on Saturday, June 5, 6abc hosted “2021 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show: Show info, exhibits and things to do.” Dr. Heidi Syropoulos, medical director at Independence, spoke on the program about the mental health benefits of gardening.
