Philadelphia, PA – Independence Blue Cross (Independence), the leading health insurance organization in southeastern Pennsylvania, announces it’s partnering for the twelfth year with WorkReady Philadelphia, a program managed by the Philadelphia Youth Network, to help the City of Philadelphia meet Mayor Nutter’s Summer Jobs Challenge for high school students. Independence has provided nearly 400 student internships and professional development opportunities since WorkReady Philadelphia was founded in 2003.
“We are committed to cultivating opportunities for students to grow, learn, succeed, and graduate high school,” said John Clayton, Independence’s manager of diversity, inclusion, and workforce initiatives. “Our partnership with WorkReady Philadelphia is one of the best ways our company can show young people in our community that we truly care about their future.”
This year, Independence will host 30 high school student interns and sponsor an additional 40 high school student interns at local companies throughout the city for a six-week paid summer internship. The high school internships encourage professional development, mentorship, and higher education. These internships will begin on July 6.
After graduation from high school, the interns have the opportunity to come back to work at Independence through the company’s ten-week College Intern Program. The paid college student internships give practical training to college students in their areas of concentration and provide support to Independence business areas. The college internships will begin on June 1.
