Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Business Journal (PBJ) honored Independence Blue Cross (IBC) senior vice president and chief informatics officer Somesh Nigam as the Emerging Executive of the Year today at their 2013 Innovation Awards. In addition, PBJ named IBC as a finalist in the Health Care Company of the Year category.

PBJ’s Innovation Awards celebrate health care and science companies that continue to reshape the medical industry in Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey. The publication included profiles of both Somesh and IBC in its October 25 issue.

Somesh is the driving force behind IBC’s move to unleash the power of big data and predictive analytics to help solve many of the most challenging health care problems facing our country and region. Under his leadership, IBC is teaming with top institutions such as Penn Medicine and New York University and NYU Langone Medical Center to research innovative ways to keep people well, lower health care costs, and provide superior care.

“Somesh leads the informatics division, which is responsible for providing cutting-edge data and analytics services to Independence Blue Cross’s customers and stakeholders,” PBJ wrote. “Since joining Independence Blue Cross in December 2012, he has built a strong informatics team to drive more sophisticated use of technology to propel business innovation. He is a trusted business advisor to the executive leadership.”

Somesh is also the author of numerous published articles and conference presentations in the area of health informatics and outcomes research. He is a sought-after speaker at many forums and panels, and he has been nominated to join several distinguished boards — such as New York University’s Science Advisory Board and the editorial board for Applied Clinical Trials journal.

Prior to joining IBC, Nigam was vice president of Healthcare Informatics, Scientific & Clinical Affairs at Johnson & Johnson. In this role, he created a new enterprise-wide health informatics capability to provide data and analytics tools.
