Independence Blue Cross Executive speaks at D.C. Summit on patient engagement

Paul A. Tufano shares insights on company’s role in patient engagement

Philadelphia, PA – Paul A. Tufano, Independence Blue Cross (IBC) executive vice president, general counsel and president of Government Markets, joined industry leaders today at The Aspen Institute and The Advisory Board Company “Care Innovation Summit 2014” in Washington, D.C., to discuss the collective role of physicians, hospitals, other health care professionals, and insurers in patient engagement. Tufano also highlighted best practices for engaging patients in treatment and prevention efforts.

Patrick Littlefield, Ph.D., acting director, Veterans Affairs Center for Innovation (VAIC), moderated Tufano’s panel, “Elevating Patient Engagement to Drive Meaningful Behavior Change,” which included these distinguished experts:

  • Lisa Bielamowicz, M.D., chief medical officer, The Advisory Board Company
  • Sally Okun, R.N., vice president for Advocacy, Policy and Patient Safety, Patients Like Me

In Tufano’s panel remarks, he addressed how IBC is working to engage members in their own care by specifically highlighting two key relationships:

  • The collaboration with New York University and NYU Langone Medical Center to design a new way to spot cases of undiagnosed diabetes and to predict pre-diabetes in patients in order to improve care and lower costs;
  • The partnership with Penn Medicine to research and improve medication adherence for heart attack survivors.
