Philadelphia, PA — May 29, 2019 — On June 1, 2019, Independence Blue Cross (Independence) will begin to offer drug rebates at the point of sale to Commercial fully insured members who have prescription drug benefits and fill rebate-eligible brand medications through retail pharmacies or the mail. Independence has historically used the rebates received from drug manufacturers to help offset all members’ prescription drug plan costs and premiums. However, as drug costs continue to rise, Independence believes there is a greater need for additional transparency and innovative methods that ensure members are getting the best value, directly, for their health care dollars.

“We make every effort to keep prescription drug costs down for our members and in the past year even introduced new technology called PreCheck MyScript that gives physicians in our network information, at their fingertips, on less expensive drug options they can prescribe to members based on their benefits plan,” said Susan Larkin, senior vice president of Health Markets at Independence Blue Cross. “Offering drug rebates at the point of sale is an excellent way to support these existing efforts and help keep costs down for our members.”

In addition to offering these rebates to Commercial fully insured members, Independence self-funded customers will be able to opt-in to point of sale rebates.
