Independence Blue Cross CEO addresses “Big Data” and technology in health care at The Atlantic event

“Inventing the Future of Health” sponsored by Independence and the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Philadelphia, PA – Yesterday, Independence Blue Cross (Independence) President and CEO Daniel J. Hilferty addressed “Big Data” and advanced technology in health care at The Atlantic “Inventing the Future of Health” townhall sponsored by Independence and the BlueCross BlueShield Association. The event, which took place at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, brought together entrepreneurs, doctors, researchers, business leaders, patient advocates, and health officials to learn about new technologies’ potential to impact health outcomes.

“At Independence, we believe that we have a deep responsibility to the people we serve to lead and champion innovations that will keep them well,” shared Hilferty to an audience of industry thought-leaders. “We believe that ‘Big Data’ has the power to be a catalyst for the change we need to increase the quality and reduce the cost of care.”

In Hilferty’s remarks, he addressed how Independence is more powerfully using data analytics by working with other Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies and other health care leaders around the country to identify gaps and solve big health care challenges. He spoke of Independence’ s collaboration with New York University and NYU Langone Medical Center to develop machine-learning algorithms that could use Independence’s medical and pharmacy claims data to spot cases of undiagnosed diabetes and to predict diabetes in patients.

The “Inventing the Future of Health” townhall featured keynote interviews and a panel discussion moderated by The Atlantic’s Washington Editor-at-Large Steve Clemons.
