Independence Blue Cross Breakfast encourages workplace wellness through annual Walk at Lunch Event

Seventh annual National Walk @ Lunch Day set for April 30, 2014

Philadelphia, PA – Independence Blue Cross (Independence) today welcomed nearly 100 guests from 40 area companies to a kickoff breakfast at its Market Street headquarters for the seventh annual National Walk @ Lunch Day. Designed to build excitement for Independence’s annual spring walk — one of the largest in the country — the breakfast encouraged area employers to help their employees turn a working lunch into a walking lunch through participation in National Walk @ Lunch Day on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Rittenhouse Square.

At the breakfast, Kimberly Eberbach, Independence’s vice president of wellness and community health, welcomed area businesses and highlighted the company’s continued support and enthusiasm for the National Walk @ Lunch Day event.

“The Independence Blue Cross National Walk @ Lunch Day breakfast provides an opportunity for our customers to come together, network with one another, share their wellness experiences and challenges, and leave feeling energized to either start or continue on their journey,” said Eberbach. “I’m proud of our ongoing commitment to both the community and our customers in supporting healthy lifestyle choices.”

In addition to speakers from Independence’s wellness team, representatives from Independence customer groups shared their perspectives on National Walk @ Lunch Day and their various approaches to worksite wellness. Regional companies and topics included:

  • SugarHouse Casino — How Walking Changed a Life
  • County of Delaware — Meeting People Where They Are
  • School District of Haverford Township — A New Tradition: National Walk @ Lunch Day Champions
  • USLI (United States Liability Insurance Group) — Slainte: Inspiring a Culture of Good Health

In order to give breakfast attendees additional workplace wellness ideas, members of Independence’s wellness and community health team also shared details about Independence associate wellness activities, including:

  • Independence’s approach to long term wellness planning;
  • Independence’s associate wellness roadmap, which includes a new three-year, three-pronged approach to Be Nourished, Be Active and Be Energized; and
  • Highlights of the company’s Walking Works program.

On April 30, Independence will host a centralized walk in Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square, while smaller walks will take place throughout the region at employer sites, schools, government offices, and senior centers. Businesses and organizations interested in participating in the 2014 National Walk @ Lunch Day event can register online at ibx.com/walkatlunch.

In addition to National Walk @ Lunch Day, Independence supports numerous events and activities designed to promote physical exercise and healthy lifestyle decisions by its members and the community, including the 2014 Blue Cross Broad Street Run on May 4.
