Philadelphia, PA — Independence Blue Cross (Independence) announces a new collaboration with The Franklin Institute in support of Science After Hours and the Giant Heart exhibit.

Science After Hours

The Franklin Institute’s Science After Hours is a monthly after-hours event designed exclusively for adults ages 21 and over. As lead sponsor, Independence’s support will help bring experiments, demonstrations, games, and live performances to attendees. Each event has a unique theme:

  • June 25: Pride
  • August 27: Sci-Chella
  • September 24: Clue
  • October 22 and 29: Wizard School
  • December 3: Home Alone

Independence will be on-site at each Science After Hours event to offer fun, interactive activities that support the Franklin Institute’s theme of lifelong learning and Independence’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of the community.

The Giant Heart

For more than 50 years, visitors of all ages have walked through the iconic Giant Heart and the surrounding interactive exhibits. This area highlights the importance of exercise, healthy diet, and a balanced lifestyle. In the 5,000 square foot exhibit space, visitors can:

  • Walk through the two-story Giant Heart
  • Navigate through an artery
  • Step into a surgical suite
  • Pump blood through the chambers of the heart
  • Investigate various animal hearts

Independence’s long-term support of heart health education and advocacy can also be found in its commitment to CPR Ready. CPR Ready is an initiative to improve survival rates for sudden cardiac arrest by increasing access to Hands-Only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) training. In 2016, Independence joined a group of leading health organizations in the Philadelphia region to form CPR Ready. Since then, CPR Ready has trained more than 100,000 people on how to save a life.

During the Science After Hours program in 2019, CPR Ready will join Independence in the Giant exhibit hall to promote and demonstrate Hands-Only CPR and AED training.

Founded in honor of America’s first scientist — Benjamin Franklin — The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and premier centers of science education and development in the country. Today, The Franklin Institute continues its dedication to public education and creating a passion for science by offering new and exciting access to science and technology.
