The Independence Blue Cross Foundation recognizes National Nurses Week May 6-12 and the invaluable contributions of our region’s nursing population to health care. The American Nurses Association first designated this week of honoring and celebrating nurses in 1991.

From 2004-2011 Independence Blue Cross, and beginning in the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, has partnered with 21 nursing programs and invested nearly $20 million in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral scholarships, and student nurse internships.

In June, the Foundation will welcome 25 nursing students who will participate in a 10-week summer internship program where they will gain experience in a health care/insurance administration setting or at a community health center. The internship program also provides nursing students with the opportunity to build professional competencies and leadership skills.

To date, 215 students have participated in these internships.
