170 students learned to ride safely with free bikes as a part of physical education studies
On May 30, Independence Blue Cross (IBX) joined the Philly Bike Ride and the School District of Philadelphia at James Logan Elementary School for the inaugural Graduation on Wheels. This celebratory event recognized Logan’s 2nd–5th grade students for completing a full year of bicycle training as part of their physical education curriculum.
As the first school in the district to incorporate bicycling into physical education classes, Logan Elementary has been piloting the program with the help of the Philly Bike Ride and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. During Graduation on Wheels, each young rider was celebrated for mastering safe cycling skills and rewarded with a brand-new bicycle, helmet, and lock, empowering them with new transportation freedom and lifelong healthy habits.
Blue Crew impact
Several IBX Blue Crew volunteers spent the day at Logan School to help ready the space and guide the students. The team assisted with bike selection, helmet and bike personalization, monitoring along the bike course, and distribution of bike locks for all 170 students.
Supporting community health and well-being
For more than 85 years, IBX has helped enhance the health and well-being of the Philadelphia community. This includes serving as the exclusive health care company of the annual Philly Bike Ride. Graduation on Wheels is part of Philly Bike Ride’s mission to make bicycling safer and more accessible, especially in underserved communities.
IBX also fosters safe cycling as presenting sponsor of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s annual Bike Month celebration, which includes Bike to Work and Wherever Day. IBX is also the presenting sponsor of Indego, Philly’s award-winning bike share program which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in April.
