Independence Blue Cross (IBX) received the 2024 Founders Award from the Philadelphia Police Foundation at the organization’s eighth annual “Night for Blue” event on June 5. IBX President and CEO Gregory Deavens accepted the award on behalf of IBX.

In his acceptance remarks, Deavens thanked the first responders from the Philadelphia Police Department for their work to keep our city healthy and safe. “We all know that the challenges of policing a large, complex city like Philadelphia are immense,” he said.

Deavens saluted the Philadelphia Police Foundation for supporting officers as they address their own mental health while continuing to serve their neighborhoods as they are “often the frontline responders.”

Deavens also credited the Philadelphia Police Department for its work to address the gun violence epidemic as well as improve the lives of those struggling with issues such as homelessness and substance use.

The “Night for Blue” event is a dynamic and festive event to support the work of the Philadelphia Police Department. In addition to recognizing the Founders Award honoree, the event presents the Extraordinary Acts of Courage Award in honor of Philadelphia Police Department officers who have been killed in the line of duty or wounded in the line of fire. This year, the Extraordinary Acts of Courage Award was presented to Philadelphia Police Sergeant Richard Mendez, a 22-year veteran who was killed in the line of duty on October 12, 2023. His wife and daughter accepted the award.

The Philadelphia Police Foundation’s goal is to improve the department’s ability to protect the citizens, tourists, and businesses of the city by giving the Department vital support and resources.
