Independence Blue Cross (IBX) named John Bruno from Ocean City High School to the 2026 IBX Honor Roll, a joint initiative with the Philadelphia Phillies to celebrate teachers in the Philadelphia five-county and New Jersey regions.

Mr. Bruno was selected as an IBX Honor Roll winner for being a constant presence in his students’ lives and dedicated to education for more than four decades. Currently, he teaches advanced placement psychology to his high school students while coaching boys’ basketball and softball.

Mr. Bruno’s nomination described him as a “fixture of the Ocean City school community,” a reputation that has earned him numerous accolades. He was awarded the Ocean City High School’s Teacher of the Year award in 2023, recognized as the local Sportsperson of the Decade in 2020, and the Al Carino Boys Basketball Club Coach of the Year in 2026. During this time, he led back-to-back Group 3 boys’ basketball championships and secured his 500th career win as a coach.

That same dedication shows up outside the classroom. Colleagues say he regularly attends games, activities, and extracurricular programs, simply to support students. “He arrives early, stays late, and is always willing to volunteer,” said one colleague.

As a winning IBX Honor Roll teacher, Mr. Bruno will receive:

  • A $500 gift card
  • An on-field experience and recognition at the September 26 Philadelphia Phillies game
  • Recognition on ballpark concourse signage and across IBX social media
  • An IBX swag bag, including a Phillies jersey and cap
  • A behind-the-scenes Citizens Bank Park tour to share with students or staff
