For the third straight year, Independence Blue Cross (Independence) was named a 2023 honoree of The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia by Philadelphia Foundation, in partnership with Points of Light and local partners. The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia provides a standard for corporate citizenship and showcases how employers use their time, skills, and resources to drive social impact in their communities and company.
For 85 years, Independence has worked to enhance the health and well-being of local communities. This includes community sponsorships, such as Indego Bike Share and the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, and through the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, which by the end of 2023 will have awarded grants totaling more than $80 million to nonprofits reaching vulnerable populations and medically under resourced areas.
Since 2001, Independence’s corporate volunteers — the Blue Crew — have supported more than 100 diverse nonprofits organizations across the region, including those that are working to address good health and well-being, food insecurity, and education and literacy. In 2022, more than 1,000 Independence associates volunteered nearly 3,400 hours benefitting 48 regional nonprofits. Associates also logged 3,426 hours of independent volunteer time outside of Blue Crew events.
The Civic 50 Greater Philadelphia honorees were officially recognized on Thursday, June 22, at a celebratory event at the FS Investment Corporate Headquarters located in Philadelphia.
