Independence Blue Cross accepts the Employer of Choice honor from the City of Philadelphia on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.
Philadelphia, PA — October 7, 2019 — The City of Philadelphia selected Independence Blue Cross as an inaugural 2019 Philadelphia Employer of Choice. Jeanie Heffernan, Independence EVP and chief human resources officer, accepted the honor at a breakfast meeting hosted by the Department of Commerce and the Office of Workforce Development on October 2.
In a letter, city officials noted Independence’s “hiring, retention and promotion practices that both create opportunity within your organizations and level the playing field for Philadelphians seeking to connect to career ladder opportunities.” The letter also stated that the company’s hiring, employee development, and retention practices “should be replicated across Philadelphia’s business community.”
Launched in 2019 by the City of Philadelphia Office of Workforce Development, the Employer of Choice initiative recognizes employers in Philadelphia that make an investment in the city’s workforce and its residents through outstanding hiring and promotion practices.
Twelve other organizations were also recognized this year, including six Independence customers:
- School District of Philadelphia
- Philadelphia Gas Works
- PECO – an Exelon Company
- Comcast NBCUniversal
- Temple University Health System
- SEPTA
Earlier in 2019, the Philadelphia Inquirer awarded Independence a “Top Workplaces 2019” honor based on employee feedback. In 2018, Independence was recognized as a Forbes “Best Large Employer” and received an Excellence Award for Diversity at the HR Department of the Year Awards.
