Gregory E. Deavens, executive vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer at Independence Blue Cross, recently received the 2018 Leadership Excellence Award presented by the National Diversity Council.

The National Diversity Council, which is a resource and advocate for the value of diversity and inclusion, recognized a select group of individuals from diverse fields who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities and who exceed the scope of what is expected in their organizations and communities.

To be considered for the Leadership Excellence Award, recipients had to meet specific criteria, including:

  • An extraordinary background of developing, growing and improving organizations the individual has been or is currently affiliated with.
  • Demonstrated commitment to honesty, integrity, and fairness through ethical and moral leadership.

Recipients must also serve as role models for other individuals in the profession and have a history of empowering others in their organizations.

In addition to his position on the executive team at Independence, Deavens currently serves on the board of directors for Hartford Healthcare and The Executive Leadership Council. He recently shared the story of his career and leadership advancement as part of a Leadership Speakers Series presented by Independence’s Multicultural Men’s Group, an associate resource group committed to empowering and educating men in the areas of professional development, men’s health, continuing education, and community engagement.

Deavens was honored on September 6 at the Leadership Excellence Luncheon held at the Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue during the 9th Annual Philadelphia Diversity and Leadership Conference.
