Giving back: IBX associates step up to support their communities through corporate giving and Blue Crew volunteering

Giving back to the community has been a cornerstone value at Independence Blue Cross (IBX) since the company began more than 85 years ago. In 2023, more than half of the associates at IBX donated time and/or money to a charitable cause.

Through the Blue Crew corporate volunteer program, Independence associates and their families donate their time and talent to make a positive impact in our neighborhoods. Last year, the Blue Crew supported nearly 70 nonprofit organizations in the Philadelphia region that align with IBX’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of the communities it serves. Particular focus is given to organizations addressing good health, hunger and nutrition, housing insecurity, and essential needs for children and seniors.

In 2023, nearly 1,600 Blue Crew volunteers gave more than 6,200 hours to nonprofits organizations in our region through more than 180 volunteer projects. The in-kind value of their volunteer time is equal to nearly $200,000, according to The Independent Sector, a coalition of nonprofits, foundations, and corporate giving program. Additionally, 107 associates recorded an additional 5,112 hours of volunteer work they completed on their own, such as service on nonprofit boards, pro-bono consulting and various charity work.

In addition to volunteering, IBX associates also contributed nearly $600,000 through the company’s annual charitable giving campaign. With the company match, IBX contributed more than $1 million to nonprofit organizations in our communities.
