Find out how healthy ice skating is
Philadelphia, PA – Just in time for your New Year’s resolution, the Blue Cross RiverRink this week unveiled a mobile app for iPhones called Go Figure! This new and free application, available in the iTunes store, will demonstrate to Blue Cross RiverRink visitors the fitness benefits of ice skating. Independence Blue Cross (IBC) is the founding and presenting sponsor of the Blue Cross RiverRink, Philadelphia’s only outdoor public ice rink, and IBC helped develop this mobile app as an added benefit for Blue Cross RiverRink customers – many of whom are also IBC members.
Specifically designed for Blue Cross RiverRink customers, the Go Figure! application is available for the iPhone or iPad and will work at any rink or outdoor pond. By simply pressing “play”, users can calculate the amount of time they have spent skating, and the app will calculate how many calories they have burned. Participants can also press “pause” to take a break or stop to log their statistics. Application users can also review current, recent, and overall statistics or try skating tricks by viewing the quick mini-tutorials. The application recommends how to burn more calories by trying tricks like Forward Swizzles, One Foot Glides, Cross Overs, Turning Backwards, Backward Swizzles, and a Two Foot Spin.
The Go Figure! app contains information on the fitness benefits of ice skating as well as tips on lacing your skates and recommendations for beginners. It also provides details on skating sessions and special events at the Blue Cross RiverRink – everything a visitor needs to make a visit to the Blue Cross RiverRink complete.
“At IBC we aim to create and partner on innovative health tools that are convenient, inexpensive, and user-friendly,” said Dr. Richard Snyder, IBC’s senior vice president and chief medical officer. “The Go Figure! skating app complements the IBX Healthy Steps program in that it encourages individual and group exercise in a way that is enjoyable at any fitness level. Skating is good, old-fashioned fun that happens to be beneficial for wellness too, because it not only burns calories, but it’s also a great, low-impact activity that promotes balance and builds muscle.”
Earlier in 2011, IBC launched the IBX Healthy Steps Pedometer app, the first free app of its kind from a health insurer, which allows runners and walkers to track their workouts, monitor fitness levels, and reach their health goals. The Go Figure! app has graphics and functionality similar to the Healthy Steps app, as well as a goal of providing a fitness tool to show people how exercising can help them stay on the right track for good health.
The Go Figure! app was produced and developed by Digital Pigeon, which is a Philadelphia based creative and technical company specializing in affordable, easily accessible technical solutions, including mobile application development, digital publishing, POS System development, web design, multimedia creation, and digital marketing. Along with their partners, Digital Pigeon has developed iOS applications for Google (GMaze), GE, San Rio (Hello Kitty), Conde Naste (Vogue and GQ China), and Top 40 (Asia and US) games including MeWantBamboo and Pig Rockets.
